What is NEAT in sales?

Need, Economic impact, Access to authority, Timeline: a qualification list where need and impact come first.

What it means

NEAT is a qualification list: a way to judge whether a deal can happen. The letters stand for Need, Economic impact, Access to authority, and Timeline. It is a newer alternative to BANT. Need and its business effect come first, and authority is about the path to a decision rather than a job title.

  • Need: the problem they actually have.
  • Economic impact: the business effect of that need, in cost, risk, time, or revenue.
  • Access to authority: the path through the people who must be comfortable.
  • Timeline: a date tied to a real event, not an arbitrary soon.

NEAT is a sales method: a framework for how to think and write. It is not a study result, and this page does not attach a win rate or reply rate to it. This site is not affiliated with its authors or with any company that teaches it.

What it means for a sales email

A NEAT-minded email leads with the need and what it does to the business. It does not ask are you the decision maker, and it does not ask about budget before the need is on the table. Questions should feel fair because you have shown you understand the situation first.
