What is BANT in sales?
Budget, Authority, Need, Timeline: an older list for judging whether a deal can happen.
What it means
BANT is an older qualification list in sales. The letters stand for Budget, Authority, Need, and Timeline. A seller uses it to check whether money can be spent, who can say yes, whether there is a real problem, and when it needs to happen.
- Budget: whether money can be spent.
- Authority: who can say yes, or the path to that person.
- Need: the problem they actually have.
- Timeline: when this needs to happen, and what makes that date real.
BANT is a sales method: a framework for how to think and write. It is not a study result, and this page does not attach a win rate or reply rate to it. This site is not affiliated with its authors or with any company that teaches it.
What it means for a sales email
The order in the name is not the order to use in an email. Asking a stranger about budget before you know their need reads as a shakedown. On an early email, lead with the need. Authority is better handled as a path, like who else should see this, than as a blunt are you the decision maker.
The Free Sales Email Grader can score BANT on its own or side by side with NEAT, so a budget-first ask stays visible.
