What is SPICED in sales?
Situation, Pain, Impact, Critical event, Decision: a checklist for recapping what you learned from a buyer.
What it means
SPICED is a sales checklist. The letters stand for Situation, Pain, Impact, Critical event, and Decision. Sellers use it to check what they have learned about a buyer and what is still missing. It is mostly used after a first conversation, not to introduce yourself to a stranger.
- Situation: how things work for them today.
- Pain: the specific problem they described.
- Impact: what that pain does to the business or the person, such as time, money, or risk.
- Critical event: a real date or event that makes it urgent, like a launch or a renewal. Soon is not a critical event.
- Decision: who decides, and how.
SPICED is a sales method: a framework for how to think and write. It is not a study result, and this page does not attach a win rate or reply rate to it. This site is not affiliated with its authors or with any company that teaches it.
What it means for a sales email
SPICED fits a recap email after a call. Play back their situation and pain in the words they used, name the impact, mention the real date that makes it urgent, and confirm who else is part of the decision. Then ask for a next step that moves the decision forward.
On a cold email, missing a critical event or a decision path is normal, because you have not talked yet. The Free Sales Email Grader treats those parts as expected after discovery, not as a cold email failure.
